I am having the same exact problem!!!! Only difference is that I am trying to install the DNS role on a virtual instance of Server 2003. My system properties tell me that my copy of Windows Server is currently SP2. It keeps asking me for the SP1 CD1 whenever I try to add the role for DNS. I am trying to create a McAfee ePO server for an exercise at work and will not e able to if I cannot promote a DNS server on my domain controller.
The copy of Server 2003 came from a thumb drive that contained the .iso file from a coworker and he pulled it from our servers where we keep all of our applications. Nobody seems ot have seen this error before. I'm wonderign should I just go ahead and attempt to uninstall and reinstall my copy of Server 2003 or should I look for a workaround or something???? I'm terribly baffled by this. Any ideas?
This step-by-step article describes how to make the forest-wide locator records under the _msdcs.ForestName DNS zone available on every DNS server in the forest when you upgrade domain controllers that are running the DNS Server service from Microsoft Windows 2000 to Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
After all the DNS servers in the forest root domain are running the Windows Server 2003 DNS Server service, configure your ForestName zone to be stored in an Active Directory-integrated domain-wide application partition. Similarly, configure your DNS records for the _msdcs.ForestName domain name to be stored in a separate _msdcs.ForestName zone that you store in an Active Directory-integrated forest-wide application partition.
The following steps assume that the DNS zones for the Active Directory forest root domain were created during the promotion of a Windows 2000-based domain controller, and that all domain controllers in the forest root domain that host the DNS server have been upgraded to Windows Server 2003.The following is a summary of the procedure that you use to configure the subdomain. This procedure is described in detail after the notes.

There are a couple of options for stopping and starting the DNS server on Windows Server 2003. The net stop and net start commands have been around since theearly days of Windows NT and are commonly used to stop and startservices, if for no other reason than their availability andsimplicity. You specify the name of the service after the command tostop or start it. Here is an example of restartingthe DNS server in two steps using these commands:
The DNS server in the core installation option has no direct console. You can interact with the dnscmd and netsh commands, but for zone configuration, you will likely find the normal dnsmgmt.msc snap-in the best way to configure the DNS server for small configurations by connecting to the core server from a full installation system. However, if you foresee many like-configured DNS servers, scripting the build and configuration out will make rapid deployment seamless.
